When a loved one dies, your world can be turned upside down. Even when the loss is expected, it can still be painful. Trying to go through grief alone can often be hindering to the process of healing. Grief support groups were created to help others get through the pain of losing someone dear. There are many positives to attending a grief counseling support group.
Support Groups and Who They Help
Support groups typically involve one or more therapists who lead a group of roughly five to 15 patients. Typically, groups meet for an hour or two each week. Some people attend individual therapy in addition to groups, while others participate in groups only.
Grieving a Loss
Nobody knows what it feels like to lose a loved one, unless they have been through it themselves. You might feel like your spiraling downwards, and nothing can bring you out of it. Everyone grieves in different ways, but it is important to know you are not alone! You might feel isolated, and extremely depressed to a point where you don't want to live anymore. Just know that these feelings are normal.
